Maze Runner: The Death Cure Pulls In $1.5 Million In Thursday Previews
Maze Runner: The Death Cure sprinted towards a $1.5 million haul in preview showings on Thursday night. (via Box Office Mojo) The third and final film in the Maze Runner series follows Dylan O'Brien's Thomas and his band of escaped Gladers as they embark on their most dangerous mission yet.
That mission involves them attempting to break into the legendary Last City, a WCKD-controlled labyrinth that may turn out to be the deadliest maze they have ever faced. If they manage to make it through the maze, the Gladers could finally get the answers they have been seeking for years.
The trilogy-capping film was delayed almost a year from its planned release after O'Brien suffered an injury on set while performing a stunt. The delay doesn't appear to have affected the movie's box office just yet, though– its preview showings hold up well when compared to Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials' $1.7 million.
The Death Cure is projected to open around $21 million, compared to the first film's $32.5 million and the second's $30.3 million. The Death Cure, which also stars Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Kaya Scodelario, Patricia Clarkson, and Walton Goggins, has received mixed to negative reviews from critics and currently sits at a 44 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.
Second place for the weekend will likely go to Dwayne Johnson's Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, which should continue to make a strong box office showing with $13.1 million. Steven Spielberg's The Post is likely to take second place with around $11.7 million, while The Greatest Showman will probably take fourth with around $8.5 million. Christian Bale's Hostiles is set to expand to 2,815 theaters and is expected to bring in around $5 million.
