Dwayne Johnson Monkeys Around In New Rampage Trailer

It's not often that Dwayne Johnson co-stars with anyone bigger than him, but that's about to change.

Warner Bros. released a new trailer for Rampage, the upcoming action flick based on the hugely popular video game series, and it offers up a look at how Johnson's character gets wrapped up in all the, well, rampaging.

Johnson plays a primatologist named Davis Okoye, a man who has an unbreakable bond with George, an incredibly intelligent silverback gorilla that Davis has cared for since birth. But a rogue genetic experiment mutates the otherwise gentle ape into an enormous monster with a temper, and Davis soon learns that there are more super-sized predators flattening much of North America. He teams up with a discredited genetic engineer (Naomie Harris) to find an antidote, but he has to prevent a global catastrophe while also protecting George.

Considering there are no human heroes in the Rampage games and the series has very little in the way of plot, this is a pretty clever way to infuse some heart into the source material. It seems a little reminiscent of the relationship that Chris Pratt's character has with the velociraptors in Jurassic World mixed with last year's Okja and Kong: Skull Island

There are plenty of other familiar faces in the trailer: the cast includes Jeffrey Dean Morgan (The Walking Dead) as a government agent, Malin Akerman (Watchmen) as the woman responsible for the animal mutations, and Joe Manganiello (True Blood) as the leader of a private military group.

Rampage thunders into theaters on April 20.
