A Quiet Place Scares Up $4.3 Million In Thursday Previews

A Quiet Place isn't going to be quiet at the weekend box office. The monster movie brought in a massive $4.3 million in Thursday previews, suggesting a strong run at the weekend box office, where it will face off against Blockers, Ready Player One, Chappaquiddick, and The Miracle Season. A Quiet Place follows a family who live on a haunted farm where the paranormal creatures are attracted by noise. Because of this, they try to keep as silent as they can, using sign language to communicate and being sure to avoid all potential scratches, bangs, and clangs. However, when the mother (Emily Blunt) gets pregnant again, they have to figure out a way to survive what is sure to be a noisy night.

John Krasinski stars alongside his real-life wife Blunt in the film, which he directed and co-wrote with Impulse's Scott Beck and Bryan Woods. The movie, which also features Millicent Simmonds and Noah Jupe, has been hailed by critics with a 97 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, and received a strong marketing push, including a buzzy Super Bowl trailer. 

Paramount is predicting an opening in the high teens or low twenty millions for A Quiet Place, although tracking says the film could open to between $33 and $38 million. The film's Thursday previews top those of Annabelle: Creation, which brought in $4 million Thursday before opening to $35 million over the summer. It is possible that A Quiet Place could build on strong word-of-mouth to potentially even top $40 million in its opening.

Also opening this weekend is the R-rated comedy Blockers. The movie stars Leslie Mann, Ike Barinholtz, and John Cena as three parents who team up to stop their daughters (Kathryn Newton, Gideon Adlon, and Geraldine Viswanathan) from going through with a pact to lose their virginities on prom night. The film, the directorial debut of Pitch Perfect's Kay Cannon, holds an 82 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

Blockers brought in $1.5 million in previews, topping the $1 million that Game Night brought in last month ahead of its $17 million debut. Universal thinks the movie will debut in the mid teens, although predictions show that it could open between $17 and $21 million. The film will be competing with Ready Player One for second place; that film is expected to bring in somewhere around $20.5 million in its second weekend in theaters.

Also opening this weekend is the Helen Hunt drama The Miracle Season, about a volleyball team that comes together after the death of one of their teammates. The film has not been a favorite with critics, sitting at a 33 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, and is expected to barely make it into the top ten with $3.4 million. 

Last up is Chappaquiddick, which will likely fall out of the top ten despite receiving positive reviews from critics. The movie stars Jason Clarke as Senator Ted Kennedy, recounting the story of the car crash that killed his passenger, Mary Jo Kopechne (Kate Mara). The film took in $175,000 in previews and should debut between $2 and $4 million. Also in the mix is Wes Anderson's Isle of Dogs, which will expand into 547 theaters. The film is expected to bring in around $5 million.
