Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle Sequel Gets Official Release Date

Time to head back to the jungle.

Sony Pictures has officially dated its upcoming Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle sequel, marking it down on its film release schedule for December 2019.

The news came during the final moments of Sony's movie slate presentation at this year's CinemaCon, where the studio also unveiled the chilling first trailer for the Tom Hardy-led Venom film, during which chairman Tom Rothman announced the debut date for the next Jumanji franchise entry.

"Don't give all your screens to Star Wars," Rothman joked (via Deadline) to event attendees in the Colosseum at Caesars Palace, taking a cheeky shot at Disney and Lucasfilm more often than not securing a December release date for one of their Star Wars series installments.

Directed by Jake Kasdan, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle is currently Sony's top-grossing film in history at the domestic box office, earning $404.1 million in North American theaters. Globally, it's performed just as well, taking in $956.6 million across international territories. It remains a mystery whether filmmaker Kasdan will return for the sequel, though it been confirmed that actors Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Karen Gillan are reprising their roles as Smolder Bravestone, Franklin "Mouse" Finbar, Sheldon "Shelly" Oberon, and Ruby Roundhouse, respectively.

It's unclear exactly when in December the untitled third Jumanji movie, which follows up after Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and the 1995 Robin Williams-starring original, will bow. However, we do know it likely won't launch onto silver screens on December 20, 2019, as that's when Star Wars: Episode IX is slated to premiere. Then again, with Sony being a studio that's unafraid of a little challenge and one that will drop a new trailer in the middle of the night (like the recently released Venom one), the Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle follow-up may very well launch on that same day or sometime pretty close to it. Either way, come next holiday season, moviegoers will have a new Star Wars movie and a new Jumanji film to see. Double the fun!
