Avengers: Infinity War Actor May Have Revealed Their Death Is Permanent

This post contains spoilers for Avengers: Infinity War.

Avengers: Infinity War hands-down had the most devastating ending the Marvel Cinematic Universe has ever seen. But the rest of the movie was pretty bleak, too, full of hard goodbyes for favorite characters from the first scene onward.

While audiences wait to see who returns to finish the fight in Avengers 4, one performer in the long-running series has just come out and said it, letting people know he's probably not coming back.

Idris Elba, the English actor who played the Asgardian guardian Heimdall, bid a fond farewell to his character in a Twitter post. In the post, he wrote "#SpoilerAlert Gonna miss my guy...Heimdall..." The post seemingly confirmed that the keeper of the Bifrost was one of the Marvel heroes we could consider gone for good.

Heimdall was among the very first characters to see their demise during Thanos' assault, meeting his end along with Loki and an untold number of innocent, randomly-chosen Asgardians.

Heimdall used the last of his strength to summon the Bifrost, spiriting Bruce Banner away to Earth, where the scientist proceeded to be extremely unhelpful in all his fights to come. Maybe Heimdall should have Bifrosted Thanos into the center of a exploding sun while he had the chance.

Regardless of what Elba says now, don't be too taken in by the sentimentality. The record shows that Elba has had anything but a loving public relationship with Marvel Studios.

As far back as Thor: The Dark World, Elba was making delightfully unfriendly comments to the media about how Marvel movies are "torture", and that the indignity of working on them "ripped [his] heart out".

Of course, with the central MacGuffin of Infinity War being a gauntlet that can turn back time, reshape reality, and seemingly house the souls of the dead, there's no telling whether or not Elba is truly free from his curse.

After all, Avengers 4 wrapped filming in January, before Infinity War was even released. Elba may have Heimdall in the rear view, but that doesn't mean his character doesn't have a scene or two in the fourth movie. Considering how secretive the studio was during the shoot, it's possible he doesn't even know.

If the actor's Instagram is anything to go by, Elba spent Infinity War weekend racing single-seater Formula E cars in Paris, France. Doesn't seem like he's too bummed about his newfound freedom. But if he does end up making a surprise return, well — he wouldn't be the first Asgardian warrior to come back from the dead.

Avengers: Infinity War is out in theaters now. The next movie in the MCU series, Ant-Man and the Wasp, is set to swarm theaters on July 6.
