Luke Cage: Behind The Music Of Marvel's Netflix Series
When Marvel's Luke Cage hits Netflix, the music will do more than just establish the tone for the Harlem setting, according to a new featurette. Crank up your volume and watch it above.
If you don't know about the character from the comics, Luke Cage is a former convict left with super strength and unbreakable skin after a sabotaged experiment. According to the show's official synopsis (via ScreenCrush), "Cage becomes a fugitive trying to rebuild his life in modern day Harlem... But he is soon pulled out of the shadows and must fight a battle for the heart of his city."
Music supervisor Adrian Younge enlisted Ali Shaheed Muhammad of hip-hop outfit A Tribe Called Quest to help curate the soundtrack, and in the clip, Younge said they treated each of the 13 episodes as 13 "different albums." Showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker also revealed that each of the first season's episodes are named after a song by influential Brooklyn rap duo Gang Starr.
The featurette also includes appearances by A$AP Ferg, Method Man, and the show's star Mike Colter, each providing thoughts on the series and how the music helps define it.
The first season of Luke Cage will be available Sept. 30 on Netflix. Here's what to expect from the series, and what we think we learned from the trailer.
