Things You Missed In The Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 Teaser Trailer

The first footage from Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has finally been released, and it shows off all the fan favorite antiheroes as they get ready for their next adventure. There's not a whole lot of plot revealed here (hey, we did say it was a teaser trailer), but there are still a few potential plot points and character moments to unwrap. We went over every scene with a fine-toothed comb to see what we could glean from our first look at James Gunn's sequel, and here's what we found.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 opens May 5, 2017.

The music is still awesome

As if there was any doubt that the follow-up wouldn't feature a killer soundtrack, those fears are assuaged here. Writer/director Gunn famously used a mixtape as a framing device in the first film, and with a second tape introduced at the end of the story, we'd expect Vol. 2 to follow that same format. The teaser trailer revives "Hooked on a Feeling," a track used to great effect during the first Guardians of the Galaxy film, to set the tone for the action here. We can't wait to hear which classic rock songs actually make the cut for Vol 2.'s soundtrack.

Star-Lord is still jonesing for Gamora

One lingering subplot at the end of the first film was the burgeoning romance between Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) and Gamora (Zoe Saldana). They flirted a bit in the first film (Look out for that "pelvic sorcery!"), and the setup at the end seemed to indicate they had a little something going on as they all flew off to guard the galaxy. But judging by the dialogue here, there's certainly been some trouble in paradise since then. We get to see a scene between Star-Lord and Drax (Dave Bautista), where Drax is offering up some hilarious advice on matters of the heart. He tells Quill: "There are two types of beings in the universe. Those who dance, and those who do not... You just need to find a woman who is pathetic. Like you." Wise words, and definitely an indication that domestic bliss has proven elusive.

Rocket is teaming up with Yondu

We already knew Michael Rooker's fan-favorite space pirate Yondu would be back for this film, but we didn't know much about the context of his appearance. The footage here shows Yondu and Rocket apparently teaming up for a mission inside some large ship or facility, and they certainly seem to be working together. Mixing up fun combinations of characters is a staple of these big Marvel movies (and also the first Guardians of the Galaxy film), and it seems that trend will continue here. We can't wait to see how these two get along.

There will be more gravity-defying stunts

One of the best set pieces in Guardians of the Galaxy was the gravity-defying jailbreak from the space prison, during which Rocket disables the gravity and causes all the guards to float in the air while the Guardians escape in a pod. Look closely at the scene featuring Rocket and Yondu in the trailer here, and you'll notice some similar effects. As they walk, the duo seem to be surrounded by floating characters (we're thinking this is a ship or space station). Could this effects scene pay homage to the prison break from the first film?

Gamora gets a major action scene

We don't know who she's fighting yet, but we get an epic hero's shot of Gamora standing on a large platform holding a sword. After striking a warrior's pose, she takes off on the attack—we just can't actually see her opponent. Gamora is one of the greatest fighters in the Marvel Comics universe, and it's great to see her big screen counterpart getting a chance to show off that particular skill set. We were told in the first movie that she's a force to be reckoned with, and she looks to prove it in Vol. 2. Also, what's the deal with the large, glowing object behind her—is it a power source, perhaps?

Star-Lord gets an updated look

The dark red leather duster became synonymous with the look of Star-Lord after the first film (heck, they even redesigned the comics character to match it once the film became such a hit), but Peter Quill's attire gets a bit of an update in the sequel. We see Quill sporting a different shirt (which makes sense—dude has to have more than one shirt, right?), and his overall outfit has a different appearance. In some scenes, he looks to be wearing a metal vest (possibly armor, or a jetpack, though his rocket boots usually handle those duties). But of course, the classic duster also seems to still be a part of the look. Oh, and his mask is still around.

Nebula is back, possibly as a prisoner

We'd heard the character of Nebula (Doctor Who alum Karen Gillan with a shaved head), a.k.a. Gamora's evil stepsister, would be back in the sequel—and we get our first peek at her here. Early reports indicate she could be (at least mostly) on the same side as the Guardians this time around, though the fleeting shot we get of her here shows her (seemingly) as a prisoner with a bag over her head. Who has her captive, and why? Admittedly she did help Thanos in the last film, so you'd imagine there's a bevy of characters who could be after her at this point.

Drax and Quill are now pals

It seems Drax and Quill have bonded quite a bit in the time since the first film ended, as the scene here between the two shows them talking about Quill's relationship troubles with Gamora. We don't exactly know when this sequel takes place compared to Guardians of the Galaxy, but it certainly seems like a decent bit of time has passed—at least enough for these two to have become buddies along the way. We already got to see all the characters come together in the first film, so it should be a lot of fun to see them play around with and deepen those relationships here.

Baby Groot is positively adorable

The post-credits scene with dancing Baby Groot was one of the most memorable moments in the first film, and early reports indicate we'll be seeing a decent bit of the little guy in the sequel—and the footage here certainly backs that up. We get to see him in the closing shot, sitting on Rocket's shoulder (a nice reversal callback to their dynamic in the first film). The fact that Gunn is doubling down on Baby Groot, as goofy as it may seem on the surface, has us really excited for this movie. It's a major change for the character, and it'll be interesting to see how Groot fits into the dynamic in tiny form.

They're keeping the new characters under wraps

One thing you didn't see in this teaser trailer? Any of the new characters we know will be popping up in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Kurt Russell joins the ensemble as Ego the Living Planet, Pom Klementieff is playing the comics character (and sometimes Guardians team member) Mantis, and Elizabeth Debicki plays Ayesha. For comics fans those are some major names, and it seems Marvel is holding onto those reveals until a bit closer to the actual release of the movie. Which isn't really a bad idea, considering it's still seven months away.

This isn't even the actual trailer

When the footage here hit the internet, Gunn jumped on Twitter to make it clear this teaser isn't actually connected to the first official trailer, which is coming down the pipe soon-ish. Instead, Gunn said this is merely a "sneak peek" the crew put together for fans, "totally separate" from the actual trailer. For those of us wanting to see more of Vol. 2, that's very good news—the first trailer should feature mostly (if not entirely) new footage compared to what we see here.
