Cars 3 Teaser Hints At Seriously Dark Turn
Pixar's Cars 3 will arrive in theaters this summer, and if the first teaser is any indication, you might want to bring a hanky.
The brief but incredibly ominous clip (above) puts us in the middle of a high-speed race in which aging Lightning McQueen (voiced by Owen Wilson) struggles to keep up with the newer cars. Suddenly, our hero spins out and suffers a spectacularly violent crash. The screen cuts to black, and then we see the tagline: "From this moment, everything will change."
Of course, Pixar has always found ways to balance heartbreaking moments with uplifting ones. (Remember Finding Nemo, Up, Toy Story 3, and basically every movie Pixar ever made?) And we know the crash is just the beginning of McQueen's story in Cars 3.
Here's the official synopsis: "Blindsided by a new generation of blazing-fast racers, the legendary Lightning McQueen is suddenly pushed out of the sport he loves. To get back in the game, he will need the help of an eager young race technician, Cruz Ramirez, with her own plan to win, plus inspiration from the late Fabulous Hudson Hornet and a few unexpected turns. Proving that #95 isn't through yet will test the heart of a champion on Piston Cup Racing's biggest stage!"
While that all sounds a lot like the plot of Talladega Nights, we're sure Pixar has a fresh new spin–you know, beyond the whole talking cars thing.
Cars 3 opens in theaters on June 16, 2017. In the meantime, check out some of the depressing things you see in all Disney movies.
