Teen Wolf Showrunner Explains The Story Behind Stiles' Real Name
Teen Wolf finally revealed Stiles' real name on Tuesday night's episode and boy, was it a doozy.
Stiles' first name has been a mystery since the MTV show first aired in 2011. Various clues dropped throughout the series told fans that it started with an 'M' and was something so bad that it was basically "a form of child abuse," according to Coach Finstock. Later hints also said that it had something to do with the word "mischief."
The showrunners and stars have promised viewers for a while that Stiles' real name would eventually be revealed, and on Tuesday's episode, they ponied up.
"I have a son," said Sheriff Stilinski, finally beginning to remember Stiles, who had been erased from his memory after sacrificing himself to the Ghost Riders. "His name is Mieczyslaw Stilinski."
According to showrunner Jeff Davis, the long, hard-to-pronounce 'Mieczyslaw' was exactly what he was looking for.
"A few years ago, I knew I would have to actually reveal Stiles' name at some point," Davis told Entertainment Weekly. "I was looking for a Polish name that was incredibly difficult to both spell and pronounce. Mieczyslaw sounded like 'mischief.' It seemed like a perfect word to describe Stiles. Both as a mischievous child and equally misbehaved adult."
Davis didn't give any clues about whether or not Stiles' real name will play into the series going forward, but as the show heads into the last leg of its final season, every detail could be a key to unraveling its complicated mythology.
