The Letter For The King Season 2 - What We Know So Far

The Letter for the King, a fantasy coming-of-age series, premiered on Netflix in March of last year. Based on the 1962 Dutch novel, titled De brief voor de Koning, by Tonke Dragt, the series was adapted and developed by Will Davies. It follows Tiuri (Amir Wilson), a young squire, who becomes involved in a dangerous journey to deliver an important letter to the king after a prince has put the kingdom of Dagonaut in danger. Though at first reluctant to embark on the journey, and only after being asked to do so by a dying knight, Tiuri soon discovers he doesn't have much of a choice other than to move forward with the trek — luckily, he finds allies along the way to help him. And while on his journey, Tiuri ends up involved in a prophecy about a hero who will defeat the ruthless prince and protect peace in Dagonaut.

The first season of The Letter for the King has just six episodes, with a bit of a cliffhanger in the final moments of the season 1 finale. Given how the first season came to a close, the series seems to leave the door open for more episodes in the future. Here's what we know so far about a potential second season.

When will season 2 of The Letter for the King be released?

As of now, Netflix has not yet renewed The Letter for the King for a second season and it's unclear when their decision will be announced. Even though it's been over a year since the first season was released, COVID-19 has upended just about every film or television production, so the slow seeming response isn't necessarily a negative.

One of the stars of the show, Thaddea Graham, who plays Iona, spoke with Digital Spy in March of this year about the status of The Letter of the King. Graham said of a possible second season, "We haven't heard a yes or a no. I suppose that's good, that it's not been an outright no, and I think all of us would go back, I mean, who doesn't want to go back, and ride horses, and play with swords?"

Graham further emphasized that she thinks there's "a lot to explore" with the show's plot, so hopefully we hear some news regarding the show's fate soon.

Who will be in season 2 of The Letter for the King?

If The Letter for the King gets a second season, we can likely expect to see all of the major players returning — with a couple of exceptions. In the midst of a fight, Jussipo (Jonah Lees) is stabbed and ultimately dies. Additionally, the ruthless prince and major antagonist Prince Viridian (Gijs Blom) is out of the picture as well, as he was defeated by the prophecy's hero, Lavinia (Ruby Ashbourne Serkis).

Besides the heartbreaking death of Jussipo and the cathartic downfall of Viridian, all of the other main characters are still alive and well, including our protagonist Tiuri. Once he gets caught up in the journey to deliver the letter, Tiuri works alongside Lavinia, an aspiring cartographer who is avoiding her fate of being married off into a wealthy family; she and Tiuri become allies. Soon, Iona (Thaddea Graham) also joins the quest, but later betrays them by joining their opponents, the Red Riders. Other allies, who actually stay faithful, include Foldo (Jack Barton), Arman (Islam Bouakkaz), and the — now late — Jussipo.

We can likely expect all members of the main cast — whose characters made it through the first season alive — to return for a potential season two.

What will season 2 of The Letter for the King be about?

In the final episode of season 1, the letter finally made it safely to the king after being delivered by Tiuri and his allies, and the team was then made knights upon their return to Dagonaut. In the final scene, before Queen Alianor (Emilie Cocquerel) knights the group, she gives a speech in which she declares that the darkness is now in the past thanks to the work of the Novices. But then, a large flock of Starlings fly overhead — set to some eerie music — heavily implying that the darkness may not be entirely gone from their world and may even still be a threat.

With that final twist in the last moment of season 1, a second season could very well pick up soon after the knighthood ceremony. Plus, the book that the show is based on has a sequel. In the followup novel, The Secrets of the Wild Wood, one of the kings' knights goes missing and Tiuri is tasked with a new journey into the Wild Wood to find the missing knight.

Between the subtle cliffhanger and a whole second book of source material, it seems a second season of The Letter for the King would be just as action-packed and entertaining as the first. Here's to hoping Netflix soon announces its renewal!
