Vin Diesel Says Groot Spin-Off Is 'Inevitable'
Being turned back into seedling might have been the best career move Groot could've made.
Now that Vin Diesel's Guardians of the Galaxy character is "Baby Groot," it seems like the world just can't get enough of him. If you don't agree, you probably missed the teaser trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.
And although Diesel has previously talked of a potential solo movie about Groot, he recently told MTV International that a spin-off with Bradley Cooper's Rocket Raccoon is "inevitable." Of course, that could just be Vin Diesel being Vin Diesel.
"It's something that [director] James Gunn has talked about, and something that I know that he would love to do," Diesel said. "Sure, I think it could be very interesting. I think it's inevitable. I think, you know, that character's so enigmatic. He was already one of the most unique characters in the Marvel universe, and I think what Marvel has done, primarily what James Gunn has done to realize that character has exceeded beyond anyone's expectations."
Although Groot gained popularity as a member of the Guardians of the Galaxy, the character has actually been around the Marvel universe for a very long time. He first appeared in a 1960 installment of Tales to Astonish, and he was originally an alien invader that intended to capture humans for experimentation. He was reintroduced as a hero in the 2006 comic crossover Annihilation: Conquest, which also featured Rocket, Star-Lord, and Gamora.
We'll have to wait to see if anything sprouts from the spin-off idea. Meanwhile, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 arrives in theaters May 5. Check out why Baby Groot is more important than you think.
