Upcoming Sequels You Didn't Know Were Being Made

Sequels are all around us. From Alien to Rocky, long-running franchises are inescapable. Some are fairly obviously blockbusters like Avengers, Transformers, and the Fast and Furious movies, and some aren't—like Now You See Me 2, London Has Fallen, and Bridget Jones's Baby. It's with the latter in mind that we've rounded up a handful of upcoming sequels you might not even know were being made.

Wedding Crashers 2

The hit nutty buddy comedy about two men who live to pick up women at weddings is getting a sequel: New Line is ready to back a follow-up to the 2005 smash hit Wedding Crashers, according to Variety. The original grossed over 200 million domestically over a decade ago, and now Wedding Crashers director David Dobkin is laying the groundwork for a sequel that could include 007 himself, Daniel Craig. Dobkin wrote on Quora:

"Wedding Crashers came out at a time when people weren't doing lots of sequels. We did come up with a great take. Vince, Owen and myself sat around at Owen's house one day and broke the story. It was really really funny. We wanted Daniel Craig to be the ultimate wedding crasher, with his sexy body and his speedo, and the two guys would be incredibly threatened by him."

Provided Dobkin can tap into the same chemistry, energy and knockdown laughs the all-star cast summoned for the first film, this could actually be pretty funny.

Pacific Rim: Uprising

Slated to drop in February 2018, Pacific Rim: Uprising features John Boyega—of Star Wars: The Force Awakens fame—opposite Charlie Day reprising his role as Dr. Newton Geiszler. Yes, the studio took its sweet time officially greenlighting this movie, but it's finally on now, and we're already hoping for more epic Jaeger battles. While not much is known about the plot, director and franchise mastermind Guillermo del Toro told Collider what fans can expect.

"It's a few years after the first one," he hinted. "It's not an immediate follow-up. It is the world having been freed of Kaiju, what happens to the world after—what happens to the Jaeger technology once the Kaiju are not a threat. It's quite a jump."

American Pie 5

Years after the release of American Reunion, the fourth theatrical installment in the American Pie series, franchise veteran Tara Reid revealed there's a serious ongoing discussion about a fifth chapter in the raunchy comedy saga. On the Australian television show Kyle and Jackie O, Reid said "There's actually talks," and "they may be doing it in Las Vegas." Reid said she'd totally be down to be a part of the movie, and the franchise might still be bankable—American Reunion brought in $234 million worldwide—even if we're not quite sure the world needs to see another American Pie theatrical release.

Assassin's Creed 2

Never mind that Assassin's Creed bombed last December: executive producer Pat Crowley told GameSpot he fully expects to make it the start of a film franchise. "It's not a one-off," insisted Crowley. "Everybody expects that this movie will continue."

Star and producer Michael Fassbender also told IGN development for the sequel has already begun with a working idea for a third movie—even after The Hollywood Reporter pegged Assassin's Creed as one of the worst flops of 2016, immediately after its soft Christmas weekend opening.

THR estimates Assassin's Creed will only make back 60 percent of its budget. As its report notes, "The adaptation of the Ubisoftt video game opened to a meek $14.9 million over the four-day Christmas holiday, putting its six-day launch at an underwhelming $22.4 million ... cost a hefty $125 million to make."

Gremlins 3

More than 30 years after Gremlins arrived in theaters—and more than 25 years after its follow-up underwhelmed at the box office—star Zach Galligan told Bleeding Cool that Gremlins 3 has been given the the go-ahead. The third installment in the franchise reportedly has Steven Spielberg and original Gremlins screenplay writer Chris Columbus attached.

It's not clear what the plot is yet, but Carl Ellsworth, who wrote Disturbia, Red Dawn, and The Last House On The Left (and two episodes of Xena: Warrior Princess), has been tabbed to write the script. Galligan stressed that Gremlins 3 isn't a reboot of the 1984 original, but a true blue follow-up.

Goon: The Last of the Enforcers

Goon: The Last of The Enforcers is a follow-up to Goon, starring Seann William Scott—the man you best know as Stiffler in American Pie—with a supporting cast that boasts Liev Schrieber, Elisha Cuthbert and Wyatt Russell. Interestingly, Jay Baruchel, who we know from movies like This Is The End, Tropic Thunder, and Knocked Up, will direct the sequel. Baruchel told Metro News Toronto he took the job seriously and really doesn't want to let Goon fans down.

"If someone likes something enough to get a tattoo of it," he said, "you don't want to disappoint them and you don't want to just give them the same thing again. You have no choice but to give them something that you think is better than the first movie. So that's why it took five years between the first two movies, is because we wanted to make sure we got it right."

Zombieland 2

It's the return of the double-tap. In late 2016, Deadpool writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese revealed they've received backing to pursue a sequel to Zombieland. "That's breaking news that we're on Zombieland 2 right now," the duo enthused. "We're sitting with Woody [Harrelson] tomorrow and are going to sort of walk him through some of the stuff we want to do. All the cast is pretty excited."

A Zombieland sequel has been discussed numerous times since the original racked up over $100 million during its 2009 box office run, but those talks have obviously all come to naught—so while Wernick and Rheese's excitement is infectious, we're still taking this with the teensiest grain of salt for now.

Saw: Legacy

This is the horror franchise that just won't go away. Saw: Legacy will be the eighth installment in the franchise, following the erroneously titled Saw 3D: The Final Chapter. While not much is known about the plot, it seems safe to assume it'll involve a group of people being forced to play sadistic games to stay alive. Michael and Peter Spierig directed, and it's scheduled to drop Oct. 27—just in time for Halloween.

Predator

Shane Black, who directed The Nice Guys, has been tapped to write and direct yet another film in the Predator franchise. While many believed he was going to put together a reboot, he's said he instead plans to push the franchise forward with a sequel, scheduled for release in March 2018. Black—who actually played a bit part in the original—told Collider he was reluctant to take the gig until Fox told him he'd have enough money to deliver the movie he really wanted to make. Given Black's track record with blockbuster action (Lethal Weapon, Iron Man 3), this bodes well.

Mary Poppins Returns

Emily Blunt has been cast as Mary Poppins in this belated sequel to the Disney classic. Dick Van Dyke, who played a pair of roles in the original, will also return for the follow-up, which is scheduled to come out on Christmas Day 2018. Van Dyke offered a glimpse at the plot of Mary Poppins Returns, telling The Hollywood Reporter, "This one supposedly takes place 20 years later and the kids are all grown up. It's a great cast — Meryl Streep, Angela Lansbury and that guy [Lin-Manuel Miranda] from Hamilton." It'll be interesting to see what Mary Poppins looks like 20 years into the future of the world created by novelist P.L. Travers—and 54 years after Mary Poppins offered audiences their first spoonful of sugar.
