Logan Director Interested In X-23 Spinoff

It takes a charismatic character to steal the spotlight from Wolverine, but X-23 might be just the mutant to do it.

Although we're still two weeks away from the release of Logan, all signs are pointing to a breakout performance by newcomer Dafne Keen as 11-year-old Laura–a clone of Wolverine known as X-23. And while the movie is reportedly the last time we'll see Hugh Jackman as the classic X-Men character, it might be only the beginning for X-23.

During a recent interview with We Got This Covered, director James Mangold said he would be very into creating another movie centered on the character.

"I think Dafne is incredible in the film and I would love to see another film about that character, and that's certainly something I'd be involved in," he said. "For me, that was one of the big additions I brought to the table, this decision to try to make the film about family and to try to insert Laura and the pressures that would put [on Logan]."

It's not the first time Mangold has spoken with great admiration for Keen. He also told ScreenRant that she brings a powerful performance to Logan.

"She's a remarkable actress, but she's also a remarkably acrobatic kid, and we did a lot of work both bringing her to location and training her weeks and weeks and weeks in advance," he said. "But also we just got lucky. We found her in Madrid, and she's an incredible young actress–daughter of two actors themselves... We could make real demands upon [her] and not be resorting to either computer tricks. Well, it's also very hard to find stunt people for 11-year-old girls, so you need her to be able to deliver on a lot of levels."

Although it has yet to be officially confirmed that Laura really is X-23, it seems very likely. In the comics, her real name is Laura Kinney, and she was raised in captivity and trained to be a weapon. A found footage-style promo video for the movie sure seems to line up with that backstory.
