Star Wars 8 Posters Suggest The Last Jedi Is Plural
In the Star Wars galaxy, no detail is too small to spawn a world of speculation. But this one seems a little too intriguing to ignore.
When it was announced that the official title of the eighth installment in the series is Star Wars: The Last Jedi, it inspired a lot of theories about whether Lucasfilm means there's just one remaining Jedi or if it hints that there's more. (Remember, the title Return of the Jedi references the collective group of Jedi, not one person.)
But now that the official Star Wars Twitter accounts for several international markets have shared the title in their native languages, the semantics become a little clearer. As Star Wars News Net points out, it sure seems like there's more than one "Last Jedi."
In French, the title is Star Wars: Les Derniers Jedi; in Spanish, it's Los Últimos Jedi; in German, it's Die Letzten Jedi; and in Portuguese, it's Os Últimos Jedi. What do they all have in common? They each use verbiage that indicates that "Jedi" is plural.
For example, in French, the word "last" can be rendered two different ways with two different connotations. "Dernier" is singular, while "derniers" is plural.
While we don't claim to be linguists and there are obviously subtle nuances to each language, it would probably be a pretty big coincidence that they all indicate more than one Jedi. And the folks at Lucasfilm don't often make mistakes, certainly not many as significant as the title of the flick.
So this could be a breakthrough for the rumor mill. If there's more than one Jedi, who are they? We know Luke Skywalker counts as one, and Rey would be the next contender. But maybe there are more Jedi that we aren't aware of yet?
We've still got a while to dig for clues. Star Wars: The Last Jedi lands in theaters Dec. 15. In the meantime, check out everything we know about the movie so far.
