Mel Gibson Says Directing Suicide Squad 2 Is 'Not A Done Deal'

Mel Gibson responded to rumors that he is directing Suicide Squad 2 on the Oscars red carpet Sunday night, saying that he'll "see" whether he ends up signing on.

"I just met some guys about story points," he told Entertainment Tonight. "It's not a done deal or anything, but it's just fun to shoot the bull, you know, when it comes to stories. I love doing it."

The Hollywood Reporter wrote in mid-February that Gibson, an Oscar nominee for directing Hacksaw Ridge (and a previous two-time winner for Braveheart), was in talks to direct the sequel to the 2016 superhero film. While Suicide Squad took home an Oscar Sunday for best makeup, the film was widely panned by critics, earning only a 26 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

Rumors of Gibson directing raised some eyebrows due to his disparaging comments about superhero movies in the past. He previously told Variety that he thought Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice was a "piece of s***" and that he was just "not interested in the stuff." He said: "Do you know what the difference between real superheroes and comic book superheroes is? Real superheroes didn't wear spandex."

However, Gibson hinted to ET that his involvement in the film could be contingent on being able to make it more than just a superhero movie. "If we can elevate any kind of concept, it's good," he said.
