Riverdale Renewed For Second Season

Settle in for another round of spooky plotlines, the equally-eerie high school status quo, and some delicious Chock'lit Shakes: Riverdale has just been renewed for a second season.

As reported by Variety, broadcast network The CW has given the a-okay to the Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa-created series for Season 2. Adapted from the ever-popular comic series Archie, Riverdale offers up a grittier and gutsier take on the traditional narrative, slightly diverting from the source material but pulling in a fresh new audience that, apparently, has taken hold enough to influence its success. Enough for them to see more of the gang sometime soon, and for critics to call the show an "offbeat take on the high school mythos—both addictive and confusing in equal parts."

However, Riverdale hasn't exactly smashed it in the ratings department in its first six episodes, hitting just a 0.4 rating amongst 18 to 49-year-olds with 1.16 million viewers overall, but it's appeal has bolstered the prized 18-34 Nielsen Live+7 ratings demo, something for which The CW has reportedly strived in all its television endeavors. Furthermore, the network's partnership with streaming service Netflix delivers viewers CW series in their entireties just eight days after the season finales air. Combine those figures together, and the initial Riverdale broadcast ratings seem slightly less crucial.

The series stars K.J. Apa as Archie Andrews, Lili Reinhart as Betty Cooper, Camila Mendes as Veronica Lodge, Cole Sprouse as Jughead Jones, Madelaine Petsch as Cheryl Blossom, and Ashleigh Murray as Josie McCoy of Josie and the Pussycats.
