Power Rangers Will Feature First LGBT Big Budget Superhero
Becky G's Yellow Ranger will be dealing with girlfriend problems in the upcoming Power Rangers reboot. Director Dean Israelite confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that the film will include the first ever openly gay superhero in a big budget, big screen movie in the form of Trini Kwan.
The reveal comes in the second half of the movie, when one of the other characters asks if Trini is having "boyfriend problems" only for her to reveal she's actually having "girlfriend problems." Israelite says this scene is "pivotal" for the rest of the movie. "For Trini, really she's questioning a lot about who she is," he said. "She hasn't fully figured it out yet. I think what's great about that scene and what that scene propels for the rest of the movie is, 'That's OK.' The movie is saying, 'That's OK,' and all of the kids have to own who they are and find their tribe."
LGBT superheroes have been shown in the comics before, but their sexuality hasn't been explored in any big budget superhero movies to date. While Ryan Reynolds has said that his Deadpool is pansexual and that he would like to see the character have a boyfriend, that has yet to play out (although it may in the sequel). Wonder Woman star Gal Gadot has said that, while it's possible that Diana is bisexual and had relationships with women while on Themyscira, it won't be portrayed in the character's upcoming standalone film. Characters like Ice Man, Batwoman, and Harley Quinn have also been portrayed as straight.
Introducing an LGBT Power Ranger is an admirable step towards better representation on screen, but there are plenty of other awesome LGBT comics characters who could make a big screen appearance. Here are the coolest gay superheroes who we would like to see in theaters.
