Baby Groot Won't Have His Past Memories In Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2
Baby Groot will have to start over in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. According to the film's director James Gunn, the newly diminutive character will be without his memories in the second movie, meaning that he'll be completely restarting his relationship with the team– including Bradley Cooper's Rocket, who he had a deep friendship with in the first movie.
"I think you can see it a lot, actually, they're quite different," said Gunn of the changes to Groot and Rocket's relationship in the second movie during a Facebook Live chat on Monday morning. "He is not the same Groot."
Gunn previously said that Baby Groot had been struggling since sacrificing himself to save the team at the end of the first movie, with his counterparts forced to spend time taking care of the small and immature tree, something which they aren't particularly good at. However, he did say that Rocket and Gamora take slightly better to their new babysitting job than the rest of the team, which makes sense considering the close relationships they had with Groot in the original film.
Baby Groot being without his memories entirely is a pretty interesting development, and does explain some of Groot's odd actions in the trailers and TV spots we've seen thus far. It also brings in a lot of new opportunities for storytelling, with Groot struggling to find his place in the team and the world while also trying to figure out what has come before.
We'll get to see Baby Groot's newly developing personality in full when Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hits theaters on May 5. While we wait, see why Baby Groot is actually more important than you think.
