The Last Jedi Director Says Title Is Singular
We finally have an answer.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi is all the internet is talking about lately. The release of the intense teaser trailer, interviews with franchise favorites like Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker) and Daisy Ridley (Rey), and a poster that looks eerily similar to one we saw in the original trilogy has had Star Wars fans buzzing. But there's one element, a pretty big one, that still had everyone scratching their heads: the film's title.
There's been a hot debate about whether the "last Jedi" refers to a single person or a group of Force-sensitive fighters. However, The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson went on record to clear the air.
Speaking with Good Morning America, Johnson finally put uncertainties to bed. "Look, in my mind, it's singular," he said. " "In my mind, it is. Absolutely."
The question of whether the title was singular or plural wasn't even something he expected to have to answer when making the film. To him, it seemed a non-issue. "It's so funny when people started asking that when the title was announced, because I had never even pondered that question," he said. "That seems like, to me, the most... uninteresting [question]."
In that case, who is the last Jedi? When asked if it's Luke, Johnson gave a half-answer, keeping things just vague enough not to spoil the plot or reveal too much information. He referenced a line from Episode VII to table the "Luke is the last Jedi" possibility. "I mean they say, in The Force Awakens, that he's going to find the last Jedi temple, and Luke is the last Jedi," Johnson said.
Johnson did also write The Last Jedi, so perhaps there's some validity in his statement. Maybe Luke really is the final saber-swinging fighter. After all, it would explain his belief that the Jedi needs to end. Only time will tell.
Hopefully all our remaining questions will be answered when The Last Jedi releases on December 15. Until then, check out the things only true Star Wars fans noticed noticed in the film's teaser.
