Why Kylo Ren's Scars Will Be Different In The Last Jedi
Give Star Wars fans just a few precious minutes of footage with months to scrutinize them and they're bound to find some details to become obsessed with.
Although the villainous Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) appears in just the briefest of moments in the first trailer for Star Wars: The Last Jedi, something seems just a little off. Specifically, it looks like the facial scars that he received during his lightsaber battle with Rey (Daisy Ridley) in The Force Awakens aren't quite where they used to be. In The Force Awakens, they run right up Ren's nose, but now they seem to be on the right side of his face (as visible in the photo above).
A fan asked The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson about it on Twitter, and it turns out that the reason for the change has nothing to do with any juicy plot developments or mythology. Johnson responded that he just didn't like the way the original scars looked.
"It was my decision to slightly adjust it, and that was my justification," Johnson said. "It honestly looked goofy running straight up the bridge of his nose."
He does have a point. It might've been a little more distracting to have kept it where it was. Take a look at the "before" shot below.
Meanwhile, you can search for other details to analyze in the teaser trailer for the flick, set for release Dec. 15. Until then, find out why The Last Jedi will blow you away.
