Logan: Black And White Version To Hit Theaters In May

Fans will soon see Logan in a whole new way.

Logan director James Mangold took to Twitter to reveal that a black and white version of the gritty superhero film will be released in theaters on May 16. Mangold teased fans of film noir and the X-Men franchise alike by tweeting, "Suggestion. Hardcore B&W loving Logan fans should not make any plans on the evening of May 16th."

It appears that the two-toned Logan will be an exclusive, one-night-only event which classic cinema lovers, film format purists, and comic book enthusiasts alike can enjoy. Mangold's announcement comes a few weeks after he teased that the Logan Blu-ray will come bundled with "a very handsome black and white version of the picture." Sounds like it'll be the same one shown on the big screen this May.

However, don't expect to be able to cut corners and catch the black and white version at home by fiddling with your television's display settings. One fan asked Mangold, "Can B&W fans turn down the color settings to zero on any movie ever and achieve the same goals right now?" To which he replied, "The answer is no. To make a great B&W version of a film, the whole thing's gotta be regraded and timed shot by shot."

This isn't the first instance of a director releasing a black and white cut of a film, however. George Miller released a "Black and Chrome edition" of Mad Max: Fury Road as part of the six-disc Mad Max High Octane the double-disc Fury Road collections. It seems likely that Mangold's noir cut of Logan will be quite satisfying and could bring a new perspective to an already surprisingly poignant film. Mangold may even offer commentary on the black and white version, giving a bit more insight into his filmmaking decisions.

The black and white edition of Hugh Jackman's final Wolverine film will only be available in U.S. theaters. (Sorry, international fans.) However, if you can't catch the colorless version of Logan on the big screen, never fear. Mangold reiterated that the upcoming cut will still be included on the film's Blu-ray release, set to hit shelves on May 23.

While we count down the days until the black and white Logan is released in theaters, check out the easter eggs in the movie you totally missed.
