The Defenders Unite In First Trailer
The war for New York is here in the first trailer for Marvel's The Defenders. The series will unite Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Daredevil, and Iron Fist to fight against a mysterious villain played by Sigourney Weaver.
The trailer starts with Krysten Ritter's Jessica Jones in jail, where she is informed by Simone Messick's Misty Knight that she has interrupted a city-wide investigation, stealing evidence and getting her one lead killed. "I was trying to help him," a bloody Jessica responds. "But you didn't," Misty says, before she is interrupted by none other than Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox), who will apparently be Jessica's lawyer, something she does not look too thrilled about.
The trailer then cuts to Rosario Dawson's Claire Temple and Mike Colter's Luke Cage, who seem to be continuing the relationship they began in his eponymous Netflix series. "How does being Harlem's hero allow you to live an actual life?" Claire asks him. "Right now, I just wanna help people," he responds. Claire (finally) decides to connect some of the many heroes she knows, and she puts Luke in touch with Danny Rand (Finn Jones), with the two running into each other as Danny chases someone down in an alley. They briefly fight, with Luke slamming Danny to the ground (and Danny trying out his Iron Fist on Luke's face). "How come you can't be hurt?" Danny asks him. "What's the deal with that fist?" he responds. Danny, earnest as ever, tells him he's the immortal Iron Fist, with Luke having a very similar reaction to Claire's: "You're what?"
Somehow, the full group will eventually come together to fight Sigourney Weaver's villain, who ominously tells them, "The more connections you have, the easier it will be to break you." They could also have another enemy in the form of Elektra (Elodie Yung), who will be brought back from the dead, probably to become the Hand weapon she was always meant to be. However, the team will also have quite a lot of help in the form of the supporting characters from many of their shows, including Daredevil's Stick (Scott Glenn), who tells the team, "You four, the devil of Hell's Kitchen, the smartass detective, the righteous ex con, and the kid with a glowing fist– the war for New York is here. So get your s**t together."
The trailer, which includes a glimpse at the epic hallway fight scene that likely precedes the out-of-breath elevator ride shown in the first teaser, ends with a clip of the whole gang together eating Chinese food, highlighting the hilarious and quippy dynamic that is sure to make the series fun. "We make quite a team," Danny (who had better be paying for this dinner) says. "No," Jessica responds. "What are you talking about?" he asks. "Bulletproof. Blind ninja. Whatever it is you are." "Classy," she replies.
Jessica Henwick, Rachael Taylor, Deborah Ann Woll, Carrie-Anne Moss, Elden Henson, and Eka Darville are also set to appear in the series, which will hit Netflix on August 18. While we wait, get some clues about what to expect by reading up on the superhero team's untold truth.
