Vin Diesel Reveals The Secret Behind Baby Groot's Voice

Baby Groot has a distinctly adorable voice in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and the actor behind the grooving and shaking sapling reveals that it's all him.

Vin Diesel first brought Groot to life in the James Gunn-directed Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1, providing a low, gruff voice to the trisyllabic hero. The original flick saw Groot commit the ultimate sacrifice in the third act, and thus he was reborn in potted plant form, standing only about a foot high. Naturally, Vol. 2 features a noticeably smaller Groot with a noticeably higher voice.

But is Diesel behind the tiny tree's high voice? Totally.

In an exclusive interview with Entertainment Tonight, Diesel confirmed that he does indeed provide the voice for baby Groot in Guardians Vol. 2, and hardly any post-production edits were made to alter his tone or pitch. The actor revealed that the secret behind perfecting the diminutive hero's voice is years of imitating cartoon characters. Diesel later showed off these impression skills, offering up a tease of just how high he can make his voice go. Take a look in the video above.

Diesel's comments regarding the minimal voice processing that goes into Guardians Vol. 2 echo director Gunn's past statements to Entertainment Weekly. Gunn explained in an interview that though "there's a tiny amount of processing that we do on a few [Guardians] characters," it's "very little." Only minor tweaks were implemented since Diesel can "speak in a much higher register than he normally does," said Gunn.

While it's certainly surprising to learn that Diesel can hit such a high octave when voicing baby Groot, astute Diesel fans won't be entirely shocked. Ever the social media aficionado, Diesel often shares videos of himself belting out difficult notes. The actor even proved his vocal talents during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon where he gave a squeaky-voiced rendition of "Lean on Me."
