Fox Renews Gotham, Last Man On Earth

Bruce Wayne will return to Fox next season. Variety reports that the network has renewed Batman prequel Gotham, along with the Will Forte-starring comedy Last Man on Earth.

The O.C.'s Ben McKenzie stars in Gotham as a younger version of James Gordon, who would later go on to become Commissioner Gordon. The series, which also features David Mazouz as a young Bruce Wayne, also stars Donal Logue, Morena Baccarin, Michael Chiklis, Camren Bicondova, Erin Richards, Jessica Lucas, Cory Michael Smith, Drew Powell, Chris Chalk, Benedict Samuel, and Maggie Geha. The series comes from The Mentalist's Bruno Heller.

Gotham will join another superhero show, Marvel's mutant drama The Gifted, on Fox next fall. The show, despite being popular with fans, was not a lock for renewal, averaging 5.3 million viewers and a 1.9 in the demo. However, with the potential to build a block featuring superheroes from both of the big powerhouse studios, it's unsurprising that the show got a greenlight for a fourth season.

Last Man on Earth stars Forte as Phil 'Tandy' Miller, a man who believes he is the last man left on Earth, until he finds a group of misfits all just trying to survive. The show isn't a ratings hit but has done well with critics, resulting in two Emmy noms for Forte's acting, as well as one for directing, one for writing, and one for editing. Kristen Schaal, January Jones, Mel Rodriguez, Cleopatra Coleman, and Mary Steenburgen also star in the series, which was created by Forte.

Fox canceled freshman drama Pitch, along with returning series Rosewood and Sleepy Hollow, to make room on their schedule next season for a number of new shows, including Matt Nix's Marvel series, the Adam Scott and Craig Robinson comedy Ghosted, and the ensemble comedy L.A. to Vegas. The network also already has the Seth McFarlane dramedy Orville and the second revival of The X-Files. While we wait to see Fox's full slate of series, see the shows that are going to blow you away this year.
