James Gunn Reveals His Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 Script Issues
James Gunn has big plans for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, with the writer/director saying the film will bring in fan favorite character Adam Warlock and will conclude the story of the current team of Guardians. However, Gunn says that he has one major issue with the script so far– it would contradict with a small detail he threw into the background of the first Guardians.
Gunn told the audience at the E3 Convention (via CinemaBlend) that he recently finished the treatment and first draft for the film, and he feels "really great" about what he has so far. However, violating the canon has him worried. "There's the 616 universe which is the Marvel Comics Universe, which people get hung up on that canon, and then there's the MCU, the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which has a separate canon (inspired by but not exactly the same as the 616)," he said. "I did something in the first movie of Guardians where it was in the background but it was distinctly there, and people know that it's there."
Gunn said that the item in question was put in the background of the mugshot sequence in the first Guardians, where the Nova Corps has information about each of the characters scrolling by on their machinery. "Those things are something that your average viewer doesn't see at all," he said. "But there's a lot of background I put into those things about who they've worked with, where they are from, what's going on. And it's one of those things that I'm thinking about changing."
Gunn says that debating the change has been gnawing at him. "Because I have a really good storytelling reason for breaking the canon, and I stayed up last night figuring out if I'm gonna do it or not," he said. "I still don't know." Luckily, he has some time to figure it out, as Vol. 3 isn't up until at least after the release of the untitled fourth Avengers film in 2019 and possibly even later than that. Still, it's interesting to see exactly what he could be talking about, and what small detail could have that large an effect on the upcoming film.
Not many details about Vol. 3 have been released thus far, but a few clues can be found in the ending of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2– see what all of those crazy post-credits scenes really meant.
