Death Note Trailer Reveals Willem Dafoe's Ryuk

Another classic Japanese manga is coming to America.

Netflix released the first full trailer for a live-action adaptation of Death Note, the series that first debuted in 2003 and went to anime in 2006.

In the upcoming Americanized version, the story follows Light Turner (Nat Wolff), a Seattle high school student who stumbles upon a mysterious notebook that grants him the ability to kill anyone he wants just by writing their name down. It was dropped on Earth by Ryuk (Willem Dafoe), a god of death who does all of the murdering while Light uses the notebook to become a vigilante. Meanwhile, a detective named L (Lakeith Stanfield) is determined to uncover the source of the killings.

The trailer gives us our first good look at Ryuk, who looks to be just about as creepy as he does in the manga. Although the glimpses are brief, they're definitely the highlights. In the original, Ryuk stays pretty close to Light's side.

Margaret Qualley (The Leftovers) also stars as Mia in the movie from director Adam Wingard (You're Next, Blair Witch).

Death Note arrives on Netflix on Aug. 25. Until then, check out everything coming to Netflix in July.
