Silver And Black Is Inspired By Thelma And Louise, Director Says

Silver and Black director Gina Prince-Bythewood will be drawing inspiration from a couple of classic buddy movies for the upcoming superhero flick. The director revealed in a recent interview with Variety that she plans on looking to Thelma and Louise and Midnight Run when it comes to coming up with ideas for the upcoming film, although she will still add her own superhero twist.

"I wanted to tell the story of two damaged women who are at war with each other but need each other to survive," Prince-Bythewood said, adding that she has been looking into the origins of each character to see how Silver Sable became an assassin and how Black Cat was pulled into crime. The director says that she thinks that both women were severely effected by the deaths of their parents.

This dark tone marks a big departure from Spider-Man: Homecoming, Sony's last superhero offering, but, according to Columbia Pictures president Sanford Panitch, this was exactly the idea. "Superhero movies have now transcended [to the point] where they're no longer superhero movies per se; they are essentially genre movies," he said. "It's not so much that characters have a cape and fly. In Silver and Black, these women are modern and cool... They may wear costumes, but [they're] very real and very grounded."

Prince-Bythewood, who is best known for Beyond the Lights, previously described Silver and Black as the "perfect" way for her to dive into the Marvel universe, adding that she has already approached Wonder Woman helmer Patty Jenkins for advice on directing a big budget superhero movie. However, it sounds like Prince-Bythewood's dark take on the characters is a far departure from Wonder Woman's suny optimism, something which should easily set the film apart from the female superheroes who have come before.

No stars have been attached to Silver and Black yet, and the movie is still searching for a release date. (Rumor has it that the studio has already decided on Mendel Stromm– aka the cyborg super villain Gaunt– and his enforcers Tarantula and Scorpion for the villains, though.) While we wait to learn more about the film, read up on the untold truth of the Sony/Marvel partnership.
