New Marvel's The Defenders Trailer Released
Warning: This post contains spoilers for Marvel's The Defenders.
What do you get when you bring together a blind ninja, a smart-mouthed detective, an indestructible ex-convict, and a billionaire martial arts master? Marvel's The Defenders, which had a stellar outing at this year's San Diego Comic-Con.
The studio behind the upcoming superhero series stunned fans with an extended Defenders trailer featuring all four main characters. Opened by Sigourney Weaver's villainous character Alexandra, who speaks of a burgeoning war about the ravage the Big Apple, the trailer weaves through the streets of New York and sets up a narrative that has the Defenders fighting against a group of baddies who want to watch the city fall.
As the trailer rolls on, fans get a taste for how the Defenders will get along. While the team is out to dinner, Krysten Ritter's Jessica Jones calls Charlie Cox's Matt Murdock/Daredevil "weird" for being able to detect which type of dumplings a waiter is holding just by smell alone. Mike Colter's Luke Cage insists that he's not looking for "super-friends," but Cox's Daredevil says that doesn't matter because the group doesn't seem to have the skills to take down their opponents.
What follows are chase sequences, cinder block explosions, close-up shots of characters reacting to devastation, a few moments featuring Elodie Yung's Elektra, and the promise that more death is yet to come. The whole thing closes in a way Marvel fans will find satisfying and hilarious: Ritter's Jessica Jones cracks open a beer and downs the drink while the Defenders ride the subway home.

During the SDCC panel, Marvel and Netflix also screened the first episode of The Defenders, which Deadline reports "opened with a fight scene in a wet tunnel as Iron Fist and Jessica Jones try to save an injured Punisher from the villainous Hand." The premiere is said to feature a tormented Danny Rand/Iron Fist (Finn Jones), a hungover Jessica Jones, a just-released-from-jail Luke Cage, and a defeated Daredevil.
Weaver's antagonist Alexandra is also shown in the inaugural episode, reported to be "suffering from a fatal disease that is causing her organs to collapse at a rapid rate" (via Deadline). This requires her to hasten her allegiance with the Hand.
The Defenders also stars Jessica Henwick (Colleen Wing), Rosario Dawson (Claire Temple), Babs Olusanmokun (Sowande), Elden Henson (Foggy Nelson), Simone Missick (Misty Knight), Rachel Taylor (Trish Walker), Scott Glenn (Stick), Eka Darville (Malcolm Ducasse), Debbi Morgan (Delores), Carrie-Anne Moss (Jeri Hogarth), and Deborah Ann Woll (Karen Page).
The Defenders is set to hit Netflix on August 18. In the meantime, discover the untold truth of the superhero group.
