There Are Reportedly Three Frontrunners To Direct Bond 25
James Bond has a release date and his actor, now all that's left is a director.
Deadline reports that there are currently three frontrunners to helm Bond 25, and they're not necessarily who you think: Denis Villenueve, David Mackenzie, and Yann Demange. Sources said all three have had meetings about the job.
Villenueve received an Oscar nomination for directing last year's hit Arrival, and he's also behind the upcoming Blade Runner sequel Blade Runner 2049 with Harrison Ford and Ryan Gosling. That movie hits theaters Oct. 6.
Mackenzie directed the Best Picture-nominated Hell or High Water starring Chris Pine, and he's currently slated to helm Outlaw King, the story of Scottish king Robert the Bruce, known mostly from Mel Gibson's Braveheart.
French director Demange released the 2014 thriller '71 starring Jack O'Connell as a British soldier left behind the lines in Northern Ireland after dark. He's currently working on the ensemble White Boy Rick with star Matthew McConaughey.
Previous reports indicated that Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight, Dunkirk) and Edgar Wright (Baby Driver) could be contenders for the next Bond gig, but Deadline points out that it's more likely that one of them would take over the franchise when it's inevitably rebooted at some point.
There's still no U.S. distributor for the movie, but Sony, Warner Bros., 20th Century Fox, Annapurna, and Universal are all jockeying for rights to the franchise. There's still lots of time to sort it out. Bond 25 won't hit theaters until Nov. 8, 2019.
