Tom Cruise Reportedly Injured In Mission: Impossible 6 Stunt
It appears that Tom Cruise has suffered an injury on the set of Mission: Impossible 6.
TMZ recently obtained footage of Cruise on the film's London set. The video shows the 55-year-old actor jumping from a rigging on one building to a mark on another, but missing the landing and hitting the side of the building hard. Cruise is shown attempting to limp away, then collapsing before moving to the edge of the building. Crew members on the movie's safety team then approach Cruise and pull him away. Cruise was ultimately able to return to the line and make his way back to the original building.
Cruise has a ton of experience performing his own stunts, which have played a large role in the marketing of the Mission: Impossible film series. His plane sequence from Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, which featured Cruise's Ethan Hunt dangling off an Airbus 400 aircraft as it made its way down the tarmac and lifted into the sky, was a key element in the pic's promotional run.
No stranger to wild stunts, Cruise has upped his game for Mission: Impossible 6, reportedly working for an entire year in preparation for a single stunt. The upcoming film's producer, David Ellison, stated that Cruise began training right after the release of Rogue Nation.
"What Tom is doing in this movie I believe will top anything that's come before," said Ellison. "It is absolutely unbelievable—he's been training for a year. It is going to be, I believe, the most impressive and unbelievable thing that Tom Cruise has done in a movie, and he has been working on it since right after Rogue Nation came out. It's gonna be mind-blowing."
The question that remains in many fans' minds regards why Cruise would risk injuring himself for the Mission: Impossible movies. Ellison explained that it comes from "the best place" and is all about entertaining the audience.
"Tom's entire mantra for hanging on the side of the Burj Khalifa or the A380 or literally holding your breath for six minutes underwater to do the Taurus sequence is, in a world of massive [visual] effects, he said the audience can tell when it's you on a green screen or when you're actually doing it live," Ellison stated. "And the tension, because the stunt is real, actually puts the audience where Ethan Hunt is where they are in the movie. He said that's why he does it; it's all about entertaining an audience and it makes the movie better."
The extent of the injuries Cruise sustained this weekend isn't clear at the time of writing, but by the looks of the video, he suffered quite a bit of pain.
Helmed by returning director Christopher McQuarrie and starring Henry Cavill, Rebecca Ferguson, Angela Bassett, and Alec Baldwin, Mission: Impossible 6 is set to hit theaters July 27, 2018.
