American Horror Story: Cult Plot Revealed In New Trailer

It's all beginning to make sense.

After months of teasing from Ryan Murphy that the upcoming season of American Horror Story would somehow be tied to last year's presidential election and then teasers filled with a group of anarchic clowns, FX unveiled a long look at the season. Although both Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton appear in the opening title sequence, the events of election night are the starting point for the story.

Sarah Paulson plays Ally, a woman who lives in Michigan and loses it when Trump is elected president. She begins to see clowns everywhere, despite the support of her partner Ivy (Alison Pill) and the efforts of her therapist (Cheyenne Jackson).

Meanwhile, Evan Peters plays Kai, an unsteady, blue-haired man who is apparently thrilled at the election results and has something against Ally. He uses his charisma to convince Winter (Billie Lourd) into becoming Ally and Ivy's nanny in what appears to be an attempt to push Ally over the edge. Winter (who says she's no fan of children) gives their son a Twisty the Clown toy, referencing the character from American Horror Story: Freak Show.

In a line that seems pulled from the Joker's bag, Kai says, "If you get people scared enough, they will set the world on fire."
