Robert Downey Jr. Says Online Scammers Are Pretending To Be Him
If you get a personal message from Iron Man, you should definitely use caution.
Robert Downey Jr. warned fans on Wednesday (Aug. 23) that online scammers have been pretending to be him in an attempt to steal money. He said the scam artists contact fans through private messages on social media, convince victims they're the Marvel star, then ask for donations to charity groups. Of course, it's not really Downey and the money isn't going to charity.
"I will never communicate via private chat platform," the actor said in a statement on his verified Twitter account. "And I would never ask individual fans for money for any reason."
Downey said any messages he sends to fans will always come from his verified social media accounts. "I am constantly humbled by the incredible love, support and generosity of our little community, " Downey said. "Some want to take advantage of that, so let's have each other's back."
