The LEGO Movie 2 Producers Share New Details On The Sequel
The newest LEGO movie will be more profound than ever before.
Dan Lin and Chris McKay, producers of The LEGO Movie 2, recently spoke with Collider about the upcoming sequel, sharing interesting new details about the adventures to come and discussing a new storytelling style that utilizes two distinctly different perspectives.
Lin stated that the writing team, which includes former Han Solo film directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller, is "all back together" and diving in head-first under the direction of Mike Mitchell. "Chris and Phil are rewriting the script right now, but we're in production. We're picking up where the first movie left us, where the Duplo have now come and they're attacking Bricksburg. It's several years later, and you're going to see the result of that," said Lin.
Duplo, the chunkier building toys that are far less painful when accidentally stepped on than their more intricate counterparts, will represent a little girl's consciousness in the LEGO Movie follow-up.
"The Duplo represents Finn's sister, Finn [played by Jadon Sand] being the little boy from the live-action. The Duplo is her. The Man Upstairs [played by Will Ferrell] said, 'You've gotta play with your sister. That's the thing you've gotta promise me. I'll let you play with my world, but now you've gotta let your sister come in and play with your world.' Now, she's coming in, and that's the major thing that the movie is about," McKay explained.
The producer added that the film will explore what's "different and similar about gender," about how boys and girls play with toys. McKay shared that Lord and Miller, whom he describes as "super f***ing smart and really thoughtful and sensitive writers," will get into those types of questions and ideas, creating a tone similar to that of the first LEGO Movie.
"It's about something else that's really profound. I'm really excited about where the movie is gonna go because it's about these things that are actual notions that people have that might even be unconscious biases, where people don't even realize that that's the way they're looking at the world," said McKay. "You can do that in a movie like this, and still have it be a great musical with fun songs, and have action and all of the other crazy things we're gonna get into with that movie. It's gonna be a really special movie."
Lin then chimed in, revealing that the dual-perspective approach of the new film is a first for him and McKay. "Every one of our movies, so far, have been told from the point of view of one kid's imagination. The LEGO Movie 2 will be the first one told through two kids' imaginations: Finn and his sister. It's going to be really interesting juxtaposing those two different visions," he stated.
The second LEGO Movie will hit theaters on February 8, 2019. In the meantime, find out the untold truth of The LEGO Movie.
