Watch The Epic Star Trek: Discovery Opening Credits
The wait for Star Trek: Discovery is almost over. CBS shared the opening credits for the highly anticipated series on YouTube Sunday, just hours ahead of its long awaited premiere.
The credits are gorgeous, featuring slow moving imagery and an understated score that shows a marked departure from the opening sequences of past Star Trek series. The images include drawings of the tech, ships, and space that will be featured throughout the series, while also hinting at the theme of humanity which will carry throughout.
The theme you hear in the piece comes courtesy of composer Jeff Russo, with Discovery co-creator Alex Kurtzman saying that Russo's score will be "a critical part of the experience" of the series. "The original Alexander Courage theme is one of the most iconic and memorable themes of all time," he said. "It's built into the DNA of the show. So there's a beautiful segue in and out of the original theme into the more modern theme."
Discovery stars Sonequa Martin-Green as First Officer Michael Burnham, the first human to attend the Vulcan Learning Center and the Vulcan Science Academy. In the pilot episode, Burnham will be forced to make the "most difficult choice" she could make, one which will affect her, the Federation, and the entire universe. That choice could have something to do with the series' overall storyline, which will see the Federation at war with the Klingons.
The rest of Star Trek: Discovery's ensemble cast includes Jason Isaacs, Michelle Yeoh, James Frain, Rainn Wilson, Doug Jones, Anthony Rapp, Chris Obi, Mary Chieffo, Terry Serpico, Maulik Pancholy, Sam Vartholomeos, Rekha Sharma, Kenneth Mitchell, Clare McConnell, and Damon Runyan.
The series will premiere on CBS All Access on Sept. 24, with episodes hitting the streaming service every Sunday through Nov. 5. After that, the show will take a short break before beginning to premiere the second half of its run in January of 2018. While we count down the minutes until the series debuts, prep by reading up on some of the small details only true fans noticed in the show's first trailer.
