The Star Wars: The Last Jedi Trailer Is Finally Here

And now, the moment you've all been waiting for...

After days of build-up on social media, and months of anticipation since the film's initial teaser trailer was unveiled at the annual Star Wars Celebration in Orlando, Disney and Lucasfilm have released the official Star Wars: The Last Jedi trailer for the masses—and boy, was the wait well worth it.

Featuring someone (assumed to be Supreme Leader Snoke) telling Adam Driver's Kylo Ren that he saw war when he looked at him, shots of Stormtroopers marching in a giant pack, and Kylo picking up a lightsaber hilt, the footage stars off with a big bang. It then moves to Daisy Ridley's Rey grabbing a saber of her own, which glows white against the bright blue skies of the isolated planet of Ahch-To, where Mark Hamill's Luke Skywalker currently resides. And speaking of Luke, we see his mechanical hand grab the saber hilt from Rey as she states that the feeling inside her (the Force, of course) is finally awake.

As the clip rolls on, we watch Rey train with Luke, learning the ways of the Force and cracking some ground in the process. "I've seen this raw strength only once before," Luke tells her. "It didn't scare me enough then. It does now."

Elsewhere in the trailer, Kylo Ren wants the past to die and a new future to reign supreme. "Kill it," he says. "That's the only way to become what you were meant to be." Here, it's unclear whether Kylo is talking to himself or to another person, and whether the "past" he refers to is a physical one through his mother Leia (the late Carrie Fisher) or a metaphorical one. But based on the glimpses we get of Leia and Kylo's finger on a trigger, it seems Leia and the Rebels are in grave danger.

However, Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) won't go down without a fight, stating that the Rebels are the "spark that will light the fire that will burn the First Order down."

After sweeps across action sequences, the First Order gathering its troops up, starships crashing down to dust-covered planets, and Snoke telling someone to fulfill their destiny, the trailer ends on Rey's haunting words: "I need someone to show me my place in all this," which she says to none other than Kylo Ren.

Up until now, very little was known about the plot of The Last Jedi. Boyega, who plays the former Stormtrooper turned Rebel-befriending galaxy-defender Finn, previously teased that the Resistance would be roughed up and not in "the best condition" at the top of the film, and from there, the movie would spiral out beautifully and tragically into an "epic, dark story." As he explained, "It's a chance for each character to decide what side they're on and decide what they're fighting for. At the same time it's still fun. It's still Star Wars." By the looks of the full-length trailer, Boyega's word is sound, and The Last Jedi will do just that.

We also know, thanks to director Rian Johnson spilling the beans on one of the film's biggest secrets, that the titular "last Jedi" is singular: it's Mark Hamill's Luke Skywalker. This information wasn't exactly under wraps, however, as it was actually revealed in the opening crawl of The Force Awakens in 2015. Some simply didn't spot the mention right away. "There's always wiggle room in these movies—everything is from a certain point of view—but coming into our story, he is the actual last of the Jedi. And he's removed himself and is alone on this island, for reasons unknown," Johnson explained

While we still aren't without our existing questions, the most pressing of which is what Luke meant when he first uttered that shocking phrase "it's time for the Jedi to end," and now we're left with even more new ones, the official trailer for The Last Jedi was undoubtedly incredible. Dare we say that excitement for The Last Jedi has never been higher.

Written and helmed by Johnson, Star Wars: The Last Jedi is set to fly into theaters on December 15.
