Gotham By Gaslight Trailer Takes Batman To The Victorian Era
If you've ever wanted to see Batman vs. Jack the Ripper, you're in luck.
Warner Bros. Animation released a trailer for Batman: Gotham by Gaslight, an upcoming animated feature that reimagines the Caped Crusader in the 1800s.
It's based on the popular 1989 comic written by Brian Augustyn and drawn by Hellboy's Mike Mignola that's widely considered to be the first "Elseworlds" tale. Those stories abandon established timelines and continuity to put classic DC heroes in new worlds.
Set in the 1800s, an alternate Gotham is overrun with criminal gangs, prompting the wealthy Bruce Wayne to become a vigilante known as Batman. Meanwhile, a series of gruesome murders make it seem as though Jack the Ripper has come to town. Wayne is eventually suspected of being the Ripper and sent to prison. But, as the trailer gives away, he's not there forever, and he sets out to apprehend the killer once and for all.
Bruce Greenwood (Star Trek, Star Trek: Into Darkness) provides the voice of Batman while Jennifer Carpenter (Dexter) plays Selina Kyle and Anthony Head (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) voices Alfred.
The movie, which will be released straight to video later this year, will be followed by the animated Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay. Death of Superman will arrive in 2018, followed by Reign of the Superman in 2019.
