First Trailer For The Incredibles 2 Unveiled

The Justice League has some serious competition in The Incredibles. 

Fans of Pixar's animated hit The Incredibles have long been anticipating seeing the Parr family save Metroville again, but the minds behind the first flick (including director Brad Bird) weren't always certain a sequel would ever come to fruition. Thankfully, footage released at D23 Expo earlier this year confirmed a follow-up was official. And now, 13 years after the original movie launched on to silver screen, we have our first look at The Incredibles 2. 

Pixar unveiled the teaser trailer on Saturday, giving hopefuls a glimpse at Jack-Jack exhibiting his new abilities–like his power to turn himself into a bouncing ball of flame and shoot laser beams from his eyes, which he puts to use in redesigning the film's logo for the upcoming sequel. The 52-second clip ends with Bob/Mr. Incredible (Craig T. Nelson) scooping Jack-Jack up in excitement, shouting, "You have powers!" In true Jack-Jack form, the tiny tot sneezes, setting off a slew of his superpowers all at once, which results in him burning off a chunk of Bob's hair.

As Pixar chief creative officer John Lasseter revealed a few months ago, The Incredibles 2 will pick up immediately after the events of The Incredibles, with Bob, Helen/Elastigirl (Holly Hunter), Violet (Sarah Vowell), and Dash (originally voiced by Spencer Fox, now voiced by Huck Milner) squaring up against the nefarious Underminer. "It starts right as the first one finishes, so it just carries on," Lasseter stated, explaining that only "a minute" will have gone by between the two movies. "It starts with the Underminer and a big old set piece. You know that at the end of the first movie when he comes up and you see the family dressed as superheroes? Well, that's where [we] start this movie." 

Lasseter added that The Incredibles 2 will carry on the theme of "a story of a family set in the world of superheroes." The creative team came up with the idea by, in Lasseter's words, "look[ing] at our own lives and look[ing] at what's going on, and find[ing] themes that we know will resonate with the audience."

Director Bird noted at D23 Expo in July that The Incredibles 2 will focus on Elastigirl rather than Mr. Incredible. She will be the "star of this film," Bird said, and will be "off adventuring" while Bob stays at home with Jack-Jack, likely working with him on perfecting his powers. 

Joining the familiar voice cast are Samuel L. Jackson, who lends his pipe to his iconic character of Frozone one mores, and Bird himself, who reprises his role as the fictional but fierce fashion designer Edna Mode. 

Here's the official plot synopsis for the film: "Everyone's favorite family of superheroes is back in Incredibles 2–but this time Helen is in the spotlight, leaving Bob at home with Violet and Dash to navigate the day-to-day heroics of 'normal" life. It's a tough transition for everyone, made tougher by the fact that the family is still unaware of baby Jack-Jack's emerging superpowers. When a new villain hatches a brilliant and dangerous plot, the family and Frozone must find a way to work together again–which is easier said than done, even when they're all Incredible."

The Incredibles 2 is slated for a June 15, 2018 release.
