Chris Hemsworth Fights Terrorists In 12 Strong Trailer

Chris Hemsworth is no stranger to saving the world, but he'll do it in much more realistic fashion in his next movie.

Marvel's Thor stars in 12 Strong: The Declassified True Story of the Horse Soldiers, a film based on true events from the early days of the war on terror. Directed by Nicolai Fuglsig (Exfil) and co-produced by Jerry Bruckheimer (Black Hawk Down), it's a gritty tale of the real-life heroes who entered Afghanistan before the rest of the U.S. military after 9/11.

Here's the official synopsis: "Set in the harrowing days following 9/11, a U.S. Special Forces team, led by their new Captain, Mitch Nelson (Hemsworth), is chosen to be the first U.S. troops sent into Afghanistan for an extremely dangerous mission. There, in the rugged mountains, they must convince Northern Alliance General Dostum (Navid Negahban) to join forces with them to fight their common adversary: the Taliban and their Al Qaeda allies. In addition to overcoming mutual distruct and a vast cultural divide, the Americans–accustomed to state-of-the-art warfare–must adopt the rudimentary tactics of the Afghani horse soldiers. But despite their uneasy bond, the new allies face overwhelming odds outnumbered and outgunned by a ruthless enemy that does not take prisoners."

The film, which co-stars Michael Shannon (Man of Steel) and Michael Peña (Ant-Man), arrives in theaters Jan. 19, 2018.
