Ben Mendelsohn's Captain Marvel Character Reportedly Revealed
Ben Mendelsohn is definitely playing the villain in the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe feature Captain Marvel—and That Hashtag Show believes that the identity of the specific character he will be playing has been revealed.
According to That Hashtag Show, a source close to the production passed along a number of characters who will be appearing in the movie, one of whom appears to be a perfect match for Mendelsohn.
Evidently, when Mendelsohn faces off with Brie Larson's Carol Danvers and Jude Law's Mar-vell, he will be playing Yon-Rogg, a Kree colonel who has a personal vendetta with Mar-Vell.
In the comics, Yon-Rogg was a nemesis of Mar-Vell, the original Captain Marvel, and jealous of his relationship with a Kree woman named Una. When he tracked Mar-Vell down on Earth, living in human disguise and working at a scientific facility as Dr. Walter Lawson, he kidnapped the facility's head of security Carol Danvers to use as a hostage.
When Mar-Vell defeated Yon-Rogg, an explosion fused Mar-Vell's Kree DNA with Danvers', giving her the abilities of a Kree/human hybrid and paving the way for her to become the next Captain Marvel.
According to That Hashtag Show, a previous version of the script contained an origin story for Danvers very similar to that version of the events. Though the movie will revolve around the story of the Kree-Skrull War, apparently Yon-Rogg is expected to emerge as the real villain.
Captain Marvel will be directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, with a story set in the 1990s and starring Brie Larson and Jude Law, with Samuel L. Jackson reportedly reprising his role as SHIELD leader Nick Fury. It will be released on March 8, 2019.
