Lady Gaga's A Star Is Born Delayed
This star will be born a little later than expected.
Per Variety, Warner Bros. has delayed the Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper-led drama A Star Is Born by nearly five months, pushing its release date from May 18, 2018 to October 5, 2018. This decision sets the film up for an awards season debut, allowing it a better chance to scoop up nominations.
Based on William Wellman's 1937 film of the same name, which starred Janet Gaynor and Fredric March, A Star Is Born follows Cooper's Jackson "Jack" Maine, a movie star whose career is on a downward slope into the completely obsolete, and Gaga's Ally, an aspiring actress Jack takes a particular liking to and assists in getting her feet off the ground. According to the film's synopsis (via Deadline), the pair "begin a passionate love affair," and Jack cajoles Ally into the spotlight, which sends her on a steep trajectory to super-stardom. But fame comes at a cost: as Ally's success eclipses Jack's, he struggles to come to terms with his fading glory.
In addition to acting in the pic, Cooper also directs, following the 1976 remake of A Star Is Born that featured Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson as opposed to Wellman's original or the 1954 take that saw James Mason and Judy Garland play the lead role. A Star Is Born marks Cooper's directorial debut.
A Star Is Born also serves as Gaga's first silver-screen role and the first performance for which she's billed by her birth name, Stefani Germanotta. Gaga previously starred in American Horror Story: Hotel and American Horror Story: Roanoke under her pseudonym.
With its new fall 2018 premiere date, A Star Is Born will open alongside Sony's Venom, starring Tom Hardy, and Fox's Chris Hemsworth-toplined Bad Times at the El Royale. It's assumed that Sony's horror flick Slenderman will slide into the May 18, 2018 slot that's now been left open for the taking.
