The Glass Onion's Puzzling New Clip Showcases The Key Players' Own Detective Skills
The 2019 mystery "Knives Out" became a major hit among viewers keen on seeing an original mystery. Written and directed by Rian Johnson, it was the first introduction the world had to Detective Benoit Blanc, played by Daniel Craig, as he worked to solve the mystery of a novelist's death. The movie's sprawling ensemble cast included Ana de Armas, Christopher Plummer, Jamie Lee Curtis, Don Johnson, Toni Collette, Katherine Langford, and Chris Evans.
The film's commercial and critical success led to Netflix paying a hefty sum for the distribution rights to two more sequels, with Johnson once again returning as writer and director. Craig was soon announced as reprising his role in the new film, titled "Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery."
Apart from Craig, the film comes with an entirely new cast that includes Dave Bautista, Leslie Odom Jr., Jessica Henwick, Kathryn Hahn, Janelle Monae, Kate Hudson, Edward Norton, and Ethan Hawke. With a trailer for the film already out, Netflix has now released the first clip from the movie, showing viewers what they can expect.
An elaborate puzzle box leads to an ominous invitation
The video begins with writer and director Rian Johnson introducing the clip and the movie. He notes the premise of the sequel, saying ,"the mystery begins when a group of old friends all receive an unexpected invitation in the form of an intricate puzzle box. But what starts as a game turns into something much more nefarious," before giving way to the clip itself.
The clip starts with a look at an intricately carved panel with a knob in the middle. A hand pulls on the knob, causing the panel to rearrange itself, and the camera pans out to reveal that the hand belongs to Lionel Toussaint (Leslie Odom Jr.), who declares "a whole new tune" once it settles.
Subsequent shots introduce viewers to Duke Cody (Dave Bautista), Birdie Jay (Kate Hudson), Claire Debella (Kathryn Hahn), and Peg (Jessica Henwick) working together to solve what is revealed to be the same mystery box sent to each of them. The four flip a revealed switch at the same time, causing the box to fold in on itself before re-opening to reveal an invitation to the private island of their mutual friend, Miles (Edward Norton).
"You'll also be competing to solve the mystery of my murder," the invitation ominously concludes as Duke tells Whiskey (Madelyn Cline) to get packing. The clip ends with the official return of Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig), saying via voiceover that the invitation "is not to be trifled with," as viewers see him looking out over the water, smoking a cigar.
