Deadliest Catch's Sig Hansen Will Never Leave The Dock Without This One Relatable Thing
Longtime fans of Discovery's "Deadliest Catch" will know that each crabbing vessel must undergo an immense amount of preparation before they venture out into the tumultuous Bering sea. The crews of these vessels must make sure that every single one of the ship's components is in tip-top shape before they embark on their journey, as a faulty radio or rusted engine could spell doom for the entire ship if not addressed properly.
On top of that, the crew members themselves also participate in numerous emergency drills before ever leaving the safety of the dock — as they have to be prepared for anything while isolated in the middle of the ocean (via Sounding). Finally, and perhaps most important of all, the ship needs to be stocked with enough food, fuel, and water to last throughout their time at sea.
Indeed, there is an absolute boatload (no pun intended) of responsibilities and preparations required before a ship leaves the dock in "Deadliest Catch" — and in the case of series regular Sig Hansen, there's one extremely relatable preparation he always makes before leaving the dock.
Sig Hansen won't leave the dock without an ample supply of coffee on board
During a 2021 interview with Channel Guide Magazine, Captain Sig Hansen revealed that there are a few key items that he makes sure are stocked in the ship's fridge before he leaves the dock. A few notable things you might find within the fridge of the F/V Northwestern include a large amount of ground beef (which Hansen claims is useful for a variety of different things), boxed milk, fishing bait, and one particular item which Hansen says is so important he actually won't leave the dock without it.
"We never leave the dock without an abundance of coffee," Hansen explained. This extremely relatable bit of preparation is sure to get a laugh out of any "Deadliest Catch" fan who loves coffee as much as Hansen does — though it's also possible that having coffee aboard these ships is actually far more important than one might think. Indeed, considering the dangerous lack of sleep that the "Deadliest Catch" crew members are forced to work with, it's likely that having a decent stock of coffee is more of a necessity than a luxury.
Although there are certainly plenty fans out there who can relate to Sig Hansen's refusal to leave without an ample supply of coffee, at the end of the day this is yet another important aspect of preparation in order to weather the grueling and dangerous conditions of "Deadliest Catch."
