Pacific Rim Uprising Trailer Reveals Massive Monsters And Mechs
What do you do when gargantuan Kaiju evolve into even more efficient killing machines? You make your own robotic killing machines even better and get the new guy from Star Wars.
There's a new trailer for Pacific Rim Uprising, and it reveals that everything is bigger and badder in the sequel to Guillermo del Toro's 2013 hit. Although Del Toro turned down the sequel in order to focus on the Oscar-nominated The Shape of Water, Steven S. DeKnight (Spartacus, Daredevil) makes his directorial debut with the big-budget sci-fi spectacle.
Set a decade after the Battle of the Breach, the Jaeger program has turned into a global defense force. But America is a very different place after the initial attack as the wealthy have moved away from the oceans and left the coasts to the poor. When the Kaiju return, it thrusts Jake Pentecost (John Boyega), son of the late Stacker Pentecost (played by Idris Elba in the original), into an epic battle to prevent the end of humanity.
"The Kaiju have found a new way," Boyega told Entertainment Weekly. "They are way more intelligent than we thought they were. The monsters you saw in the first movie were the test run, to see how the planet would hold up. The breach we thought was closed is not their only way into our world. Their plans are more specific. Jake leads the team in trying to build up a new defense against that."
That team includes Jake's old buddy Nate Lambert (Scott Eastwood) and computer hacker Amara Namani (Cailee Spaeny). Returning characters include Dr. Newt Geiszler (Charlie Day), Dr. Hermann Gottlieb (Burn Gorman), and Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi).
Pacific Rim Uprising rumbles into theaters on March 23. Check out the poster below.
