Cyberpunk Edgerunners Season 2 Isn't In The Works, According To CD Projekt Red

The streaming powerhouse Netflix continues to impress with its excellent catalog of original series, especially its lineup of titles based on video games. According to Rotten Tomatoes, the streamer has the five best shows adapted from some of the most popular franchises gamers can't get enough of, including "CyberPunk: Edgerunners." The anime was a big hit with subscribers, and despite its undeniable success, the news regarding its future is less than ideal.

There is no denying that the highly anticipated game "Cyberpunk 2077" had some critical issues when it launched, and it seemed like the franchise was in big trouble (via The New York Times). But luckily, an anime series was created based on the flawed video game, which not only received significant critical acclaim (via Rotten Tomatoes) but also gave the game new life. There was a huge shift in demand for the CD Projekt Red title on Steam as it became a top seller thanks to the reception received by "Cyberpunk: Edgerunners" (via Kotaku).

The prequel story set in the same universe as the game was a fascinating endeavor to experience for many, and the journey of a street kid becoming a black market mercenary in a cyborg-modified society led viewers on a wild ride culminating in an ending that fans will soon not forget. But after the credits rolled, many probably wondered what was happening with the second season. Now it seems they have their answer.

Cyberpunk Edgerunners is a one-hit wonder

When discussing the fate of the future of "Cyberpunk: Edgerunners" in an interview with Famitsu (via Video Game Chronicle), Satoru Honma, the CD Projekt Red community manager, expressed his interest to keep doing projects like the anime series, saying, "I personally would like to continue to work with Japanese studios to produce more anime in the future, partly because we have received very good feedback." But fans received disappointing news when the subject of a second season was brought up. "Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was planned as a standalone work, so there's no such thing as 'we are actually working on Season 2 in the background.'" The dream of a sequel set of entries to the beloved Netflix anime was officially hacked out of existence.

It's a shame there won't be another chapter for subscribers, especially since the show received so much attention right out of the gate. CD Projekt Red Global PR Director Radek Grabowski posted his appreciation on Twitter, thanking fans for watching the series over 14 million hours during its first week. According to Parrot Analytics (via Yahoo), "Cyberpunk: Edgerunners" was the most in-demand breakout series the week of September 17-23, 2022, beating "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power" with only "She-Hulk: Attorney at Law" and "House of the Dragon" surpassing it.

Unfortunately, the questions lingering from the first season may never get answered now that it's known that a second run is not happening. While the revelation is regrettable, fans can still relive every episode of the anime on Netflix, and there are plenty of shows like "Cyberpunk: Edgerunners" that fans can enjoy.
