The Chi Renewed For Season 2
The Second City's stories will continue for a second season.
The Chi, Showtime's sprawling series about interconnected lives in Chicago's South Side, has been officially renewed by the network after four episodes, according to Deadline. Production will resume in Chicago later this year.
The series, created by Master of None's Lena Waithe, has proven a hit for the network since its January 7 premiere. An average of 4 million viewers already watch the series on a weekly basis, and the audience is only growing, with the most recent episode drawing 41 percent more viewers than the series premiere.
"From viewers and critics alike, the response to The Chi has been so enthusiastic from the very start that our decision to renew the series was an easy one," said Gary Levine, Showtime president of programming. "We love the vibrant characters and the nuanced world that Lena has created. Her vision for The Chi has clearly struck a chord, and we know she has many more moving, personal and resonant stories to tell about her beloved hometown."
Joining behind the scenes for the second season to serve as showrunner is Ayanna Floyd Davis, a producer who previously worked on Empire and Hannibal. She will serve as an executive producer alongside Waithe, Common, Elwood Reid, Aaron Kaplan, and Rick Famuyiwa.
The Chi is currently midway through its ten-episode season, with new episodes airing Sundays on Showtime. It stars Jason Mitchell, Tiffany Boone, Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine, Yolonda Ross, Jacob Latimore, Alex R. Hibbert, Armando Riesco, and Jahking Guillory.
