Netflix Orders Two Seasons Of Ryan Murphy Comedy Series The Politician
Netflix is doubling down on Ryan Murphy.
According to a report by Deadline, the streaming service has ordered two seasons of an hourlong comedy series from Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and Ian Brennan, the creators of Glee and Scream Queens.
Though details about the series are currently scarce, the show will apparently focus on a wealthy Californian man named Payton who enters into a different political race each season. The main character will be played by Ben Platt of Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk, the first two Pitch Perfect movies, and the musical Dear Evan Hansen. Gwyneth Paltrow and Barbra Striesand are reportedly in talks to co-star.
The Politician is the second series that Murphy's prolific team has sold to Netflix, along with the previously announced One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest prequel Ratched. According to Deadline, the Politician deal is the biggest TV package sale of the year so far, a height reached after a week of escalating bidding between the major streaming services.
It's highly anticipated that The Politician will have musical elements, with Platt, who won the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical in 2017, on deck for several musical numbers.
Recently, Murphy and Falchuk (along with co-creator Tim Minear) successfully launched the series 9-1-1 on Fox, a second season of which has already been ordered. They also sold the 1980s-set NYC ball culture series Pose to FX for debut this summer, with the second season of American Crime Story, The Assassination of Gianni Versace, airing on the network now.
