Chicago Med Fans Are Emotional Over April And Ethan's Bittersweet Wedding
Contains spoilers for Season 8, Episode 9 of "Chicago Med."
When it comes to couples on "Chicago Med," some stand the test of time, and others burn bright and fizzle out quickly. For April Sexton (Yaya DaCosta) and Dr. Ethan Choi (Brian Tee), the former observation is undoubtedly the case for the pairing that fans affectionately dubbed "Chexton." Ever since Season 2, the pair have managed to become a stable and steady (for the most part) romantic partnership in a show that sometimes goes overboard on Dr. Will Halstead's (Nick Gehlfuss) inability to make things work with a partner. Even with DaCosta's leaving the show at the end of Season 6 only to return as a recurring guest star in the eighth season, the chemistry between Chexton never dwindled in the hearts and minds of those who love a strong and dynamic TV romance.
Although Season 8 of "Chicago Med" has brought what appears to be a never-ending string of cast departures, including Tee's exit, April and Ethan will have a happy ending. The duo officially tied the knot in a lavish and engaging marital ceremony that was most deserved for the committed couple who make it their life's work to help people above all else. Although Dr. Choi has now officially left the series (per NBC), that wedding has fans feeling a wide range of emotions, from joyous to bittersweet.
Chexton fans are happy about the couple's marriage but sad that Ethan has left Gaffney Medical
In an interview with TV Line discussing the wedding, co-showrunner Andrew Schneider was asked how he knew that April and Ethan were an end-game couple. The producer replied, "We've always said that these two love each other despite the problems that they've had in their relationship and her going off to go to nurse practitioner school. We've never lost the feeling between them. And so, we felt this was a perfect way to realize their destiny. He's changed in ways that allow him to be the man she needs and vice versa." Despite the happy union, which was always meant to be, some fans are having a hard time saying goodbye amidst the joy.
On Twitter, fan @nana_shantel tweeted, "I'm really not ready for Ethan to leave ... like at all [worried face emoji] #ChicagoMed." @MeetUsatMollys shared this sentiment by stating, "I know we've been prepping for it for weeks now, but it's Ethan's last shift at Med, and I'm NOT OKAY #ChicagoMed." But not everyone focused on the departure that was packaged with the couple's union. Fan @BethHoller pointed out, "April and Ethan are starting a mobile health clinic! I can't think of a better way for the show to send them out than like this. #ChicagoMed." Regardless of the divide in opinion, it will undoubtedly be an adjustment not seeing the happy duo each week.
