Oppenheimer's First Trailer Already Has Fans Clamoring For Cillian Murphy To Win An Oscar
There are few filmmakers nowadays who can say they've pushed the limits of the medium like Christopher Nolan. Whether he's reinventing the superhero subgenre with his acclaimed "Dark Knight" trilogy, messing with our minds in "Inception" or pulling our heartstrings with "Interstellar," Nolan always proves himself as a dominant force in the cinema world to be reckoned with. Now the "Tenet" director's filmography will take its most ambitious step yet with 2023's "Oppenheimer."
The upcoming film will tell the true story of physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, who was instrumental in creating nuclear weapons during World War II. Outside of Nolan's notable name attached to the ambitious project, the film has also received great anticipation due to its ensemble cast, including such names as Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, Florence Pugh, Benny Sadfie, and Rami Malek to name a few. However, no other actor had as much weight on their shoulder as Cillian Murphy, who would be playing the titular physicist. Fans have anticipated seeing the longtime Nolan collaborator reunite with the director and what he would bring to the hefty role. With the first full trailer out for us to see, the only explosions fans see in Murphy's future are during awards season.
Murphy's performance is too good to not be nominated
Moviegoers seeing "Avatar: The Way of Water" this weekend in IMAX also got a peek at the next cinematic epic to get hyped over with the first full trailer of Christopher Nolan's upcoming epic biopic "Oppenheimer." And between the gorgeous cinematography and stunning music, fans across the board seem to agree that Cillian Murphy is at his very best.
The overwhelmingly positive comments on the official trailer uploaded to YouTube don't skimp on Murphy's immensely emotional performance as the conflicted scientist. YouTuber Adam El says, "He better win the Oscar for this. No one deserves it more than him and Nolan." Chidiebere Nwadike was of a similar mindset, saying, "Murphy deserves an Oscar, his acting is very impeccable."
Meanwhile, one fan expresses both their excitement and hope for what's to come, commenting, "Can't wait to witness this ... And advanced wishes for Mr. Murphy for the Oscars." And Sabyasachi gives both the director and lead actor high praise by saying, "Nolan and Murphy definitely deserve Oscars for this ... the greatest director and actor of this generation."
Despite Murphy's acclaimed performances in past Nolan films such as "Batman Begins" and "Inception," the actor has yet even to be nominated for an Oscar (via IMDb). But with "Oppenheimer" putting him on a higher pedestal than ever before, that gold statuette seems ever more near. "Oppenheimer" is set to release on July 21, 2023 (via Collider).
