Melissa Joan Hart Has A Negative Take On The Idea Of Reprising Her Role As Sabrina The Teenage Witch
In the 1990s, Melissa Joan Hart became known as the star of two different teen sitcoms. She played the title characters in both "Clarissa Explains it All" and "Sabrina the Teenage Witch." In 2018, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Nickelodeon was working on a reboot of "Clarissa Explains it All" with Hart returning as Clarissa, now a mother of her own family. However, in 2022, Hart told People that the reboot was no longer happening. "Nickelodeon got a new president, and they kind of squashed the whole thing," she explained to People. "So it was actually in the works and yeah, it just sort of disappeared. It took like a year to do the contracts, which was the hardest part, and then it just kind of fizzled out. So I don't think [it will happen]."
As for Hart's other major sitcom, "Sabrina the Teenage Witch," that has also been rebooted in a way. In 2018, Netflix launched a new series called "The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina" which featured all of the same characters as "Sabrina the Teenage Witch" but with new actors playing them. The show had a different tone overall, with "Chilling Adventures" being a genuine horror series, while "Sabrina the Teenage Witch" was a lighthearted sitcom.
In a recent interview with E! News, Hart was asked if she would be interested in returning for a reboot of "Sabrina the Teenage Witch" and the actor didn't rule out the possibility, but she also didn't seem to think it was a good idea.
Melissa Joan Hart thinks the Sabrina reboot doesn't need to be done again
In a recent interview with Melissa Joan Hart for E! News at Christmas Con, Hart was asked about the possibility of a "Sabrina the Teenage Witch" reboot, which she said she didn't feel enthused about. "That's a tricky question because it's not up to me and it's already been done with Netflix, they did a version. And I just don't think it would be as great as the original. I just don't think there's any way. People like to remember; they're nostalgic for what they've had. And trying to recreate that can be really difficult as we've seen. And I always like to move forward. If it were to come about, it would have to be a special situation." Hart was then asked what she would want the reboot to be about, and Hart said she's heard many people bring up the idea that Sabrina and Harvey have a baby who ends up having powers, but that she'd prefer to find a different premise for a reboot.
The cast of "Sabrina the Teenage Witch" certainly supported the rebooted series, "The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina." The cast of "Teenage Witch" put together a video before the premiere called "Best Witches" in which they gave advice and well-wishes to the new cast members taking over their old roles. The same cast members also put together a video of their reactions watching "Chilling Adventures of Sabrina." Furthermore, Caroline Rhea and Beth Broderick (who played Sabrina's aunts, Hilda and Zelda, respectively, on "Sabrina the Teenage Witch") appeared in two episodes of "The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina" as versions of Hilda and Zelda.
