James Gunn Is Still Crushing Souls Over That Undiscovered Guardians Of The Galaxy Easter Egg
James Gunn's name has popped up in the news cycle a lot as of late, thanks primarily to his work at DC Studios. He and Peter Safran are hard at work overhauling the DC film and television slate at Warner Bros. Discovery, leaving fans with mixed feelings as they send the DC Universe in a new direction. At the same time, Gunn still has ties to Marvel Studios as well, with "The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special" hitting Disney+ in November 2022 and the long-awaited "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" set to arrive in May 2023.
No matter how much work he puts into the DC Universe, many will forever link Gunn to his time helming the "Guardians of the Galaxy" franchise. The work he has done with those characters, turning them from unknowns to globally-known favorites, is truly remarkable. Not to mention, their films have proven some of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's best, hence why they're still discussed, rewatched, and adored years after their premieres. There's also that pesky Easter egg said to hide in the first "Guardians of the Galaxy" movie.
As James Gunn himself has said for years now, the first "Guardians" flick contains one more Easter egg left to discover. He has once again confirmed that, despite the MCU fandom's best efforts, it's still waiting to be found.
Gunn has shot down another supposed discovery of the Easter egg
On January 24, 2023, @MasterTainment on Twitter posted a video claiming to have found the final "Guardians of the Galaxy" Easter egg. In his video, he claims that Ego the Living Planet — portrayed by Kurt Russell in the second "Guardians" movie — can be spotted briefly during Star-Lord's (Chris Pratt) vision of his mother, Meredith Quill (Laura Haddock), hinting at the events of the sequel. Sadly, James Gunn once again came around to let fans know that they haven't reached the finish line just yet. "Well... sorry MT," wrote Gunn in a response tweet, causing MCU fans everywhere to throw up their hands in disappointment.
And so, the search for the last "Guardians of the Galaxy" Easter egg continues on, but thankfully, the end of the search could be on the horizon. In August 2022, Gunn took to Twitter to share that he's not commenting on future guesses (something he somewhat went against here) until "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" hits theaters. The reason? It could potentially spoil the threequel. He tweeted out, "I'm putting an official moratorium on responding to guesses about the Easter egg in GotG Vol 1 until after Vol 3 is released, because I don't want to affect anyone's enjoyment of Vol 3 if by some chance someone gets the whole thing. Sorry!"
The fact that the fabled "Guardians of the Galaxy" Easter egg could potentially spoil "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" is quite a major reveal. Does that make it even more coveted and worth pursuing, or should we all let it go to avoid spoiling the end of the "Guardians" trilogy? That's up to individual interpretation, but at any rate, one can only hope James Gunn will provide some answers after the third "Guardians" movie premieres on May 5, 2023.
